SchoolWelcome to James Island Middle School

Thank you for visiting James Island Middle School's new website.  We encourage you to contact us—using the information at the bottom of this page—if we can answer any questions that you have about your child, our learning community, or the current year.

We look forward to partnering with you and your family as we make the 2012-2013 school year the best yet.

Ms. DorselWe are off to a fantastic start in this new year here at James Island Middle School, thanks to the staff, community, and the great children that you have sent us.  It is my pleasure to report that your children are actively engaged in the curriculum and lesson content, which is what James Island Middle School expects of its students.  During the 2012-2013 school year, classes at JIMS will maintain emphasis on content, as prescribed by South Carolina State Standards for core subjects.

The month ahead will be filled with many learning opportunities for your children.  With all these opportunities, we ask that every child in our school community arrives at school prepared to complete his/her “job” everyday.  In order to do this, each child is asked to be in school every day, report to school on time, give 100% effort in each task he/she completes, respect everyone in the school and community, and dress professionally and appropriately at all times.  Parents, we ask you to support these standards and commit to ensuring your child puts his/her best foot forward each and every day.

In the weeks ahead, we will be sending messages home via our Parent Link phone call system.  If you do not have a current phone number on record with the school or you would like to add a phone number, please notify the front office so that we are able to update this information in our system.

We are focusing our goals for 2013 on building student, parent, community, and business partner relationships.  We are calling on each of you to assist us in making James Island Middle School the best middle school in Charleston County, but in order to do this . . . We need your help!  Please sign up for PTA, a parent committee,or offer to volunteer if you have spare time to do so.

Thank you for your continued support and please feel free to call the school if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions!

Sincerely,

Gayle Dorsel, Principal

James Island Middle School

Students Participate in Boeing's Dream Learner Program
James Island Middle School 6th grade students have been taking the opportunity to explore career options in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) cluster, right here in our own backyard,  by attending the new Dream Learner Tours offered by Boeing. Students learned all about how Boeing's 787 Dreamliner is built and what makes it unique. They discussed the physics behind flight and put that knowledge to test by participating in a paper airplane building group activity. The tour concluded with an information session about career opportunities with Boeing, not only in the STEM cluster, but also finance, law, health science, environmental science, safety and security, and hospitality. They also emphasized what students should be doing now and in high school to prepare for these careers. All of the morning's activities took place on Boeing's observation floor, overlooking the Dreamliner assembly floor. A bank of windows along one entire side of the room allowed students to observe mechanics and engineers working side-by-side to assemble the planes. Boeing's Dream Learner tours are certain to have inspired some of our future mechanics, engineers, and pilots.

th Grade Math Competition to be held at Christ Our King
Students from Ms. Griggs’ Algebra class will be competing in the 3rd Annual Mathletics Competition at Christ Our King-Stella Maris School.  Teams of students will compete face-to-face in grade level action.  This is an opportunity for students to grow mathematically, engage in challenging and clever problem solving tasks in an exciting atmosphere.  Each team will consist of 5 students and their teacher, who will serve as a proctor for another team.

JIMS Artwork and Students on Display at the 2013 CCSD Gala!
Approximately  670 people attended this years CCSD Teacher Gala where the hard work of the JIMS faculty and students was on display throughout! From the events logo, to the re-creation of 20th century promotional posters originally created for the Moulin Rouge Night Club by Artist Henri De Toucous-Lautrel, to the design and construction of the stage set, the James Island Middle School family helped make this a "Night to Remember!" Great Job James Island Middle!

Special thanks to the James Island Middle School Art Club, Mr. Brown, Mr. Keegan, and Mr. Michael Keegan for all of their hard work!
